Homemade Dry Mix
Many people that are new to keeping rats buy pet shop rat mix believing it is a suitable food for rodents however these foods tend to be Rabbit and Guinea Pig mix with sweet cereals added (generally Fruit Loops). Nutritionally these mixes do not meet even the basic requirements for rats. A cheaper and much more enjoyable to eat option for the rats is to make your own mix. You can change the products you use in the mix from time to time so that the rats have a varied diet. It is important to include a quality lab block to this diet as they will contain all nutritional needs of the rats so you can be sure the rats in your care have all bases covered nutritionally while having food options available to them. Lab blocks and dry mix should be available to the rats 24/7.
